The Rise of Indigenous Guardians

Over 200 Programs Now Protecting Land & Waters

For generations, Indigenous Peoples have been the original stewards of the land, protecting ecosystems, wildlife, and natural resources through deep cultural knowledge and sustainable practices. Today, that role is stronger than ever—with over 200 Indigenous Guardians programs now operating across Canada.

These programs, led by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities, are proving to be one of the most effective ways to combat climate change, restore ecosystems, and strengthen Indigenous sovereignty.

Indigenous Guardianship is Expanding Across Canada

The number of Guardians programs has grown significantly in recent years, thanks to increased funding and recognition of their impact. Some key milestones include:

2017: Canada launches the Indigenous Guardians Pilot Program, funding the first groups.
2022: Over 170 Indigenous Guardians programs were active across the country.
2024: The movement has now surpassed 200 programs, with new ones launching each year.

Future Growth: First Nations leaders continue advocating for long-term, stable funding to sustain and expand these programs.

Indigenous-led conservation outperforms many government-run environmental initiatives, and many nations are calling for even greater investment in these programs.

Why Indigenous Guardians Matter More Than Ever

Indigenous-managed lands contain 80% of the world's remaining biodiversity.
Indigenous Guardians help combat climate change by protecting forests, wetlands, and wildlife.

Lands managed by Indigenous communities experience less deforestation, better species protection, and more sustainable use of natural resources.

Guardians programs create local employment opportunities while strengthening Indigenous self-governance.

The Future of Indigenous Guardianship

As the movement grows, so does the demand for:
🔹
Expanded training programs to equip more Indigenous Guardians with critical skills
🔹
Sustainable funding to ensure long-term program success
🔹
Stronger legal recognition of Indigenous land stewardship rights

At Two Feathers Indigenous Stewardship Alliance, we are committed to training and empowering Indigenous Guardians with the skills they need to protect the land, support their communities, and preserve traditional knowledge.
